PERSONALITY:

Ozpin first and foremost can be surmised as being wise, despite his looks. Overall, he is a man who values the lives and hardships of others over anything else. He comes off as a level-headed, affable man, who above anything else is rather analytical to a fault. His ability to read others comes from his years of life and with the experiences he’s shared among his many lives. Having shared a body with multiple people in the past Ozpin has gained understanding and ultimately knowledge on many walks of life. He harbors no hatred towards Faunaus, as many do in the series itself, and respects them as a powerful and capable people. He also respects his students and wishes nothing more to allow them to train and live in a time of peace, to allow them to have some childhood before the enter the world. He also cares deeply about them and offers up an ear for them should they wish to speak of their troubles. He believes in Ruby to the point where he appoints her as her team’s captain, firmly believing in her abilities and qualities to lead her team in the right direction.

Ozpin values teamwork as well, which probably coincides with his mission to unite humanity, as he makes sure his students focus heavily on it during their training and missions.
But with his experience and his resurrections Ozpin has also become somewhat jaded by the humanity he hopes to save. This quote:

“I'm sorry, but you have to understand that my behaviors are backed by experience. I'm not saying that I have reason to think you will betray me. I'm saying that I have reasons for the things that I do, the secrets I keep-“

Perfectly illustrates the point. Ozpin has been betrayed before in his many lives prior to this one, and with each betrayal it has led him to distrusting and ultimately shutting himself off towards other people more and more. Not because they gave him any reason to doubt them, but just the fact that Ozpin doubts everyone regardless. In a sense they really had no chance in breaking through to him because he’s been so set in ways for so long that it’s difficult to break for someone who has been through as much as him. Instead of growing and opening himself up towards Ruby and her group, Ozpin remains secretive and distant, always believing this is the easiest and best way to go about things in order to keep the peace and to continue to bear this burden by himself. So instead of promoting teamwork and unity he separates himself from it.
His entire history is never told to anyone, not even Qrow, James or Glynda all of whom were trusted and rather valued friends. He trusted them enough to talk to them about the Maidens, and the relics, however never about his past or the fact that Salem can’t be killed. This in turn causes Ozpin to lose the trust of those who put their lives in his hands, and with good reason, after everything he has spoken about and tried to promote he’s the one to ultimately not practice what he’s preached to an extent. Ozpin is shown to put people in danger because of his secrecy and lack of faith in those around him. Argus Unlimited is a perfect example as Ozpin neglected to inform the team that the relics attract grimm, which leads to the train being attacked by a swarm of them.

Ozpin’s past is a tragic as well as traumatic one, what with having the love of his life kill him and their children in cold blood after a disagreement on what to do with the world they now controlled. After all that it’s easy to see how fear and failing shaped him into the current man he is. His ideology of bringing humanity together was a burden for him and him alone, this thought process didn’t help matters either, and in the end he chose not to believe in those who trusted him, but instead keep to himself leading to his fall.

Despite his flaws however Ozpin has changed since his time in Oscar’s head. At the end of season 7 it can be inferred, with his speech, that he realizes his mistakes talking about how fear can warp and change a person, but that person shouldn’t be judged because fear is a powerful thing that all people fall to. Instead one should judge a person on who they become in its clutches and how they react to the world around them instead.

Ozpin’s speech speaks of himself and many others in the volume, but it’s a powerful speech in that it shows how he’s grown in the short time he’s been away in Oscar’s mind. His speech is more of a showing that he’s ready to become the savior and protector of the planet that he was entrusted to be and not succumb to the thoughts that it’s all on his shoulders to bear this burden placed upon him. Ozpin in that moment finally realizes that it's not who he was before, or what mistakes he made or fears he had before all this, but what he does despite that fear, and how much of himself he's willing to sacrifice for others, that defines what kind of person he ultimately is.
